This is a do it yourself hunt, so once the rancher shows you the ranch and best places to hunt, your party can hunt it any way you wish. Ranch has rolling sage and maple draws and has plenty of roads making it easy to hunt and retrieve game.

On avg, previous hunters have seen 10-20 bucks per day with a 196 buck taken in 2012, so the trophy caliber bucks are there. This are usually requires 5-10 points to draw a tag and this hunt includes the tag and a quality private ranch as well.

Zone 143 Mule Deer Buck Hunt, 2012

Dear Serge:
Here’s a picture  of me and the buck I successfully harvested on 11/3/12.

Tough hunt in unit 143, but a great fair chase hunt it was. I scouted in late September and saw very few deer. This hunt, under tough conditions including hot weather, dry conditions, full moon, heavy winds, etc. proved to be a challenge. However, I never saw another hunter and had some of the best country I have ever seen wide open to me. Public lands. Water, cover, feed, access….no issues. But no deer. I think they moved out of the higher elevations.

I hunted the three mountain areas and beat the brush, glassed till my eyes watered and never saw an animal the first two days there.

On day three I finally found, at daybreak, a nice sized herd of deer (about 15) containing this buck. I glassed them from one mile out feeding on a low ridge. The Leica 10x42HD’s were outstanding and from that distance I saw the cream colored butts. Then I switched to the Kowa 25 x 80 spotting scope and picked up the buck trailing the herd of does and fawns.

On went the backpack, grabbed the shooting sticks, heavy Danner boots and off I went. A one mile hike/stalk and crawled the last twenty five yards to an outcropping where I set up. The deer were gone by then as they moved to their bedding areas in the heavy junipers.

I waited for 30 minutes and finally the buck moved out at 238 yards. I turned the scope up to 10X and, when he briefly paused between two junipers, I sent the 140 grain slug on its way from the Brown Precision .270. He dropped. A nice mature 23” buck…mature and heavy…considering the conditions this year I am very pleased. He has real character.

Getting him out was a challenge as I was alone but with some dicey driving in 4WD I maneuvered the Toyota down the canyon and loaded him up. Was at the locker 4 hours later and my hunt was over.
Thank you for the opportunity to obtain this tag from you. I was very pleased with the area, its history, and the people. I stayed in town at the Best Western, ate quite well at the Owl Club, Eureka Café and shopped at Raines Market. The museum was great and I bought books and studied the area and its history. I was surprised to learn that donuts were invented by the Pony Express baker. Interesting.

I used this trip and the related long drive to get there (the loneliest road in America – Highway 50) as a time to contemplate the “ifs” in life, think through various business alternatives and give thanks for all of our blessings. The ultimate in “me time”. I will return. A real challenge to my conditioning and, as I said, “fair chase” all the way on public land.

Utah and Wyoming Elk/Mule Deer Success!

Urge2hunt just completed a mule deer and elk hunt.  Here is the summary of the hunts.

 

Our group just returned from the private land rifle hunt on the Utah Wyoming border. We harvested 2 bucks and 2 bulls on the 5 day hunt.

 

Even at 7,000 feet, the weather was unseasonably warm but our guides were able to make it happen.

 

The elk move onto the alfalfa fields owned bythe outfitter which is a great attractant to keep the elk and deer local.

This hunt is only $1250. License Vouchers are available after the left over cow licenses are gone for $ 50-$100.

In 2010 this outfitter ran an unbelievable hunter success rate for the harvest of bulls and cows together 97%.

A limited number of cow tags are available for this discount.  This hunt began August 15th and goes to  December 31 on a voucher system. These hunts are 3 days and your lodging a nd meals are in town, about 18 miles away. This will be "low impact hunting where the outfitter leases around 100,000 acres and is near one of the large elk preserves.

The hunt area is southern Colorado. Guiding, hauling the elk back to the ranch and lodging are provided. Meals are not because most hunters would rather go into town and eat at the restaurants, or get groceries at the grocery store.

Alberta Archery Trophy Mule Deer Adventure

This trophy mule deer hunt is truly a ‘one of a kind’ for the access to the highest concentration of big mule deer in Northern America.
Over our 5 day hunt, my partner and I saw a combined 75+ different bucks with well over 50 of them being 150+ class 4x4's. We averaged at 2-4 stalks per day which makes for a very exciting and exhausting hunt with many miles walked. This is an archery only hunt as rifle tags are not available to non residents.
Hunts are all on private property and over our 5 days, we did not see another hunter anywhere. Hunts are either 1x1 or 2x1 and the guide is extremely familiar with the area having grown up there.
On our hunt, we saw at least 10 bucks that would gross over 180 with a few 200 class bucks as well.
After hunting for over 30 years in the US and many other countries, this Alberta mule deer hunt was by far the most exciting and rewarding adventure, bar none. I can now imagine what it must have been like to hunt mule deer in Colorado or Nevada in the 1800's -To see this many trophy bucks each day.
I got my buck after I jumped him from his bed at 5 yards and shot him on the run at about 8 yards. I double lunged him and he still went about 400 yards before falling over on his trail. He is exactly what I was looking for: a typical 4x4 that scored 170.
The lodging is first rate with a gorgeous log cabin 3 story house within minutes of the hunting grounds. Home cooked meals, laundry, TV, internet and a very clean and modern facility await you after a long tiring hunt day.
